The Walking Dead S4E10 “Inmates” Recap

The Walking Dead (AMC) Comments Off on The Walking Dead S4E10 “Inmates” Recap

Original Airdate: February 16, 2014

Tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead gave us a glimpse of what happened to another segment of the prison community.

Beth narrates the beginning of the episode.  It’s like a page from her diary, talking about the move from the farm to the prison.  Her father feels confident that they will be able to have a prosperous life at the prison and Laurie’s baby will be able to grow up and be safe.  She’d found the diary in her backpack as she was unpacking in her new cell.  “We can live here for the rest of our lives,” she writes.  In reality, she and Daryl are killing Walkers and running out of the woods into a field.  Finally they collapse in some bushes and look up into the sky as buzzards circle in the air.  Dear Diary…scratch all of that….

As they sit around a fire, Beth tells Daryl that they should do something.  They can’t possibly be the only survivors.  Rick and Michonne and Maggie and Glenn…they could have made it.  She insists that Daryl start tracking.  She’s desperate to do something.  When Daryl doesn’t respond, she stalks off to track on her own.  Daryl looks spent.

When the sun comes up, Beth and Daryl move through the woods together.  He finds some tracks from someone who moved through the trail a few hours before.  Beth says they are alive.  Daryl says that the tracks end and something bad happened.  She says he should have faith, but he points out that “faith didn’t do shit for” Hershel.  Beth glares at him.  Daryl realizes that he is being an ass, as and Beth gathers food for the survivors, he offers her a pouch.  She’s tougher than he ever realized.

They come across some dead Walkers and Daryl says that more Walkers went through that area.  She still thinks they could be alive.  Soon a Walker jumps out of the bushes and attacks Beth before she can draw her knife.  Daryl throws him off and she stabs it in the head.  They quickly leave the scene.

A set of train tracks is over the ridge.  In the distance, Walkers devour the remains of whoever left the tracks leading out of the woods.  Daryl shoots them all.  Beth stands nearby and sees a shoe.  Suddenly she starts sobbing uncontrollably at the sight of the dead bodies.  Daryl steps onto the train tracks but he stops when he hears her wracking sobs.  You want him to give her a hug, but he just motions for her to keep moving.

Later that night, Beth uses pages from her diary to light a fire.  She narrates what was written on the pages, that they are going to survive.  She’s keeping hope that the prison is their salvation because of her father.  “If this doesn’t work, I don’t know how I can keep going.”  Daryl watches her, still saying nothing.

Carol’s girls, Lizzie and Mika, are walking through the woods.  Mika wants Carol, but Lizzie hands her sister a knife and says that Carol isn’t here.  They ask if everyone else is dead, and up ahead Tyreese turns around with Baby Judith in his arms and says that they are not all dead.   They need to keep moving.

Later that night, he bandages his arm while Lizzie goes all Lizzie Borden on some cute bunnies.  Judith starts crying and Mika points out that the Walkers will hear her.  Lizzie hands him a bottle and as she quiets down, they hear Walkers approaching.  They have to leave.  The next morning they come across some grapes.  Tyreese has to change her diaper, but Judith keeps crying.  She’s teething.  This just proves that having a baby in the apocalypse is a bad idea.  It puts you at risk.  There is a noise nearby and Mika grabs Tyreese’s injured arm.  Lizzie yells at him for yelling at Mika, and then Mika takes off running.  The noise was from a bird in a tree.  Tyreese, Judith and Lizzie run after Mika, and when they catch up to her she apologizes for being scared and not being like Lizzie.  Tyreese says that they both do good things in their own ways.  You always run from Walkers, but if you’re in a group you have to run together.  They hear a scream in the distance and Tyreese says he has to see what’s going on.  He leaves the girls with their backs together so that they can see in both directions.  Lizzie takes Judith and tells her sister to get her knife in an accessible position.  Tyreese hands Mika the gun.  “Mika, you can handle this.  You’re tough.”

By the way, what we’re seeing is a scene that took place about four hours before Daryl and Beth came through.  The dead bunnies and scattered leaves are right where Daryl said something bad happened.

Tyreese goes to the train tracks and sees that men are being attacked by Walkers.  He jumps into battle.  In the meantime, Judith won’t stop crying and Mika can’t hear what’s going on around them.  Lizzie’s eyes darken and she puts her hand over Judith’s mouth, silencing her cries and making it impossible for her to breathe.  Walkers approach them and Mika shouts for her sister, but Lizzie is too deep in her dark ways.  Mika fires the gun.  Tyreese hears the gunshot and tries to fight off the Walkers quickly.  One of the men is already bitten and the other is bitten before Tyreese can save him.  As he spins around, Carol is standing there with the girls, Judith in her arms.  Tyreese rushes to Carol and hugs her, which confuses her given that she killed Karen, Tyreese’s lover.  The man who had been bitten moans and tells the group that he strayed from the tracks, but there is a safe place up ahead where they can take the children.  He says they can trust him.  The group walks away, leaving the man awaiting his death.

Mika tells Tyreese that she didn’t run, and she didn’t leave Lizzie.  “You’re a tough little lady,” he praises.  Tyreese says that he didn’t see Carol back at the prison, so she tells him that she hadn’t gotten back from her supply run.  She arrived in time to see the end, and she followed them into the woods.  He thinks they should go back to get the car, but Carol says it isn’t worth it.  Up ahead on the tracks is a map with a spot marked “Terminus.”  The sign says that “Those who arrive stay alive.”  It’s a sanctuary.

Maggie wears her wedding ring while she sharpens her blade.  Sasha patches up David’s arm, telling him it’s ok that he’s smiling.  He insists that Tyreese could have made it out.  They don’t know.  Maggie asks how he’s doing.  Sasha says that he will be fine and that they should set up camp.  Maggie insists that they will be ok there, and that she’s going to find Glenn.  She saw the bus leave and she is going to follow it.  She leaves, and David follows her, pointing out to Sasha that they can’t split up.  As they follow the road, they find the bus (amazing coincidence!) broken down up ahead.  Maggie starts to go to pieces as she approaches it, but soon we see that the whole thing is full of Walkers.  Maggie says they need to leave.  She’s going to find out if he’s on the bus.  David proposes letting them out one by one, so Maggie stands there and kills them as they fall out.  Of course, this plan doesn’t actually work and soon the whole bus empties out.  They shoot at them and eventually take them all out.  Glenn is not one of the Walkers, so Maggie goes into the bus to check.  It’s full of flies and decaying life…and a Walker who is stuck.  She angrily dispatches him and breaks down when she sees that he’s not on the bus.

Glenn wakes up on the roof back at the prison.  He’s on a ledge and he’s surrounded by Walkers.  And they’re hungry.  The only way out is a door going back inside the cell block, so in Glenn goes.  It’s pitch black inside and he’s badly hurt, so this is not a good combination.  He seems to be alone in the cell block, which suggests that the Walkers never made it inside.  He finds the cell he shared with Maggie and grabs his riot gear under the bed.  He flops down onto the bed and grabs his head as the reality of the situation becomes apparent.  He finds a picture of Maggie and stares at it.  He starts crying.  Soon he grabs Hershel’s watch and goes to get as many supplies as he can find.  He dashes out into the yard in his riot gear and is quickly surrounded by Walkers.  He is able to break through the horde and he runs into the next yard, where he sees a woman sitting calmly behind a fence.

Glenn clears out as many Walkers as he can, then he joins the woman in the cage.  It’s Tara.  He snatches the gun from her and she says that she was a part of “this,” meaning she was with the Governor’s group.  Glenn doesn’t care because he needs her help.  He whips up a few Molotov cocktails and lights a car on fire, and then together they run from the prison.

Down the road they stop and Tara says that she saw her sister in the field.  She wasn’t supposed to be there but she was surrounded.  Tara says that she didn’t want to be a part of it but Brian tricked them and he killed that man.  “Hershel?” Glenn asks.  He doesn’t know that Hershel is dead, and Tara says that Brian killed him.  He says that Maggie is still alive and Tara is going to help him find her.  A group of Walkers approach and Glenn takes them out, and then he passes out.  Tara rushes to him and begs him to wake up, but she’s interrupted by a Walker.  She kills him quickly, crushing his skull with blow after manic blow.  Then she looks up and sees that she’s being watched by people in an army tank.  “Are you enjoying the show, assholes?” she yells.

Three people climb out of the truck.  Looks like the there are some new people in town.

I’ve said it before…I’m glad I haven’t read the comics and I have no idea who Abraham Ford is.  He was driving the truck and he’s from the comics.  As far as I’m concerned, it will be fun to see new people.  Hopefully they aren’t like the Governor and his Woodbury crew.

That was a huge episode.  Judith is alive, Carol is back, Beth is with Daryl, Maggie is with Sasha and David, Tyreese has been caring for three girls, and Glenn is alive.  But that doesn’t mean that anyone is safe.
