Supernatural Recap: “Party On, Garth”
Original Air Date: Friday March 30, 2012
Season 7, Episode 18

Bobby’s back! Bobby’s back! Bobby’s back!…well, sort of. First Castiel returns, and now Bobby. We are even treated to another episode with the loveable and hilarious demon hunter, Garth, played by D.J. Qualls. Remember, “He grows on you”.

Thighslapper

Dean receives a call from Meg advising him that there has been no change in Castiel’s condition. He is still in a catatonic state, suffering with the consequences of trading places with Sam in order to make things up to guys for betraying them. Dean receives another call from his old temporary partner, Garth, telling him that he is in Junction City, Kansas in need of assistance on a case. Garth explains that a young man was oddly disemboweled in a forest at a party with some friends. The friends had told Garth that they believed it was the local ghost of Jenny Greentree. Garth located Jenny’s grave and burned whatever remained to banish her spirit from harming people ever again. Garth thought he had stopped the madness. The next night he found out that the young man’s brother was just killed in the same manner as his brother. Garth realizes that he needs help to stop another person from being killed.

Sam and Dean meet up with Garth in his motel room and research that the father of the two boys is Jim, who is the owner of a brewery called Thighslapper Ale. They crack open a few bottles and thoroughly enjoy it. Garth even chugs one back in one swig and gets drunk. Garth is obviously a lightweight.

They arrive at the brewery posing as agents and try to speak with Jim, but he is too distraught. A friend, and partial owner of the brewery, Randy, tells the guys that there has been a lot of recent tragedy in their lives. Randy explains that he is a recent partner, because the previous one, Dale, committed suicide. The brewery manager, Marie, informs the guys that Dale’s wife is suing them because Dale did not want to sell.

The guys head back to the motel and Sam researches on the internet. He discovers that Dale was the actual brew master of the ale but left the company 2 weeks before he killed himself. Garth can’t help but notice that his E.M.F. detector keeps spiking whenever it is near Dean’s flask that once belonged to Bobby. The guys hear over the police radio that there has been a murder reported at the residence where Jim lives. Dean and Garth head over there to investigate while Sam heads over to Dale’s widow’s house.

The Grudge

Dean and Garth arrive at Jim’s house where his daughter was mysteriously gutted right in front of him and his granddaughter. It seems as though the granddaughter saw something attack her mother, but is too afraid to talk. Garth cleverly gets her talk by getting out his sock puppet Mr. Fizzles. Of course Dean rolls his eyes, but this tactic works and the girl reveals that she had an adult beverage on accident just before she saw an entity kill her mother.

Meanwhile, Sam heads over to speak with Dale’s wife. She tells him that Dale was extremely upset that Jim wanted to sell the brewery because the ale was his baby. He loved the company so much. She tells him also that Dale gave Jim and Randy a strange Japanese box with a special sake inside.

The guys decide to all meet up at the brewery because Sam wants to check out the Japanese box that he had earlier saw in the office. While they are there they notice that there is a surveillance camera pointing at them and streaming on the office computer. They quickly scan through some older footage and see that just before Jim’s sons were killed one of the sons opened up the Japanese box and drank the sake. They trust their instincts and drink some liquor to see if this will let them “see” the apparition. It works! They see a creepy Japanese girl in a long white dress with black hair following him. Randy walks in on them and tries to call 911 because he now believes Dean and Sam are not F.B.I. agents. Garth walks in and tazes Randy.

The guys take the Japanese box to a local Japanese restaurant to have somebody there interpret it. The chef tells them that this is a Shojo curse box. He explains that this is an alcohol spirit that will do great harm to whoever it is directed towards. Sam and Dean figure out that Dale felt that the company was his “baby” and so if Jim and Randy were going to rid him of his pride and joy, he would do the same by killing their babies/children. They head back to the motel where Garth has chained Randy to the hot tub. Upon researching a Shojo entity they find out that they need a samurai sword consecrated with a Shinto blessing in order to kill it. It is at this time that Garth brings up the fact that he believes that Bobby is haunting Dean and Sam. Sam admits that he has already suspected that, but believes that Bobby is not with them. He used a spirit board but got nothing. So now that the guys know that the Shojo is after Randy and Jim’s children, Sam will be watching over Marie (Jim’s daughter) while Dean locates a samurai sword. Garth is stuck in the motel room with Randy.

Dean heads back over to the Japanese restaurant and convinces the chef to bless his samurai sword. Garth begins to question Randy about why he gives so many “breaks” to the company janitor. Garth has googled Randy’s past and found out that the mother of the young janitor is Randy’s ex-secretary. Randy admits that he fathered a child with her. Garth quickly calls Dean to meet him at the brewery, and Dean phones Sam to join up as well.

Dean, the sober one?

When Garth arrives at the brewery he is able to see the Shojo because he is intoxicated. He fights off the Shojo as best he can, but gets knocked out. Sam now arrives drunk but gets knocked out, too. Dean arrives just in time to help out the janitor but he is sober. (Go figure) Dean starts wildly swinging the sword around in hopes of killing the entity. Sam finally wakes up and directs Dean where to swing but he gets the sword knocked out of his hand. Miraculously, the sword slides across the floor over to Dean. He successfully stabs the Shojo and kills it.

The next day, Garth hugs Dean and Sam as he says his goodbyes. Sam questions Dean about why he suspects that Bobby is the one who moved the sword. Sam does not believe that Bobby is with them. Just as they are about to leave the motel, Dean returns to the room because he has forgotten Bobby’s flask. Now we see Bobby standing there, but Dean does not see him. This pisses Bobby off and he calls him an idjit.
