On a Case

After a long week of searching for the prophet Kevin and his mother, Dean’s focus turns to an odd story about a jogger’s heart being torn out of his body in Minneapolis. Sam really just wants to find Kevin so that he can close the gates of Hell forever and get on with his life. Dean prevails and so the Winchester’s are on a case. They arrive at the Minneapolis police station and gather what they can to look into the jogger’s killer. The last person who saw him alive was Paul Hayes. Dean and Sam question Paul about the incident, but all he can say is that he ran past him the night the guy was murdered. This seems a bit odd because the jogger that was murdered was a great deal younger than Paul, and in tip top shape. Paul is an overweight middle-aged man. Paul mentions to Sam and Dean that he had a health scare about a year ago and changed his habits.

The guys are alerted to another case with a nearly identical murder. This leads them to Ames, Iowa. Arthur Swenson ripped the heart out of a pizza delivery guy. The guys go to question him, but he only chants “K’uhul Ajaw, Cacao Shi-Jiiy” over and over again. The guys notice that Arthur has one different eye. Later that evening, Sam and Dean get a call that Arthur is in the hospital. Arthur somehow managed to rip a piece of the cell bed frame and cut out his replacement eye. The brothers now begin to piece together that this may all have been caused by donor body parts.

Sam tells Dean that he has contacted Dr.Morisson, the anthropology professor who had previously helped them on the Amazon women case. Dr.Morisson confirms that the strange mumbling that Arthur was chanting is the dead language of ancient Mayan. Translated it means, “The Divine God Cacao is born.” They also find out that Arthur received his donor eye from the superstar football athlete, Brick Holmes. After doing more research they discover that Paul Hayes received his kidney transplant from Brick Holmes as well. They head to Boulder, Colorado, to the home of Brick Holmes.

Who is the Cougar?

Sam is star-struck as he enters the house of Brick Holmes. The tragedy is that Brick accidentally drove his car over a cliff a year ago. Brick’s mother, Eleanor, greets the Winchester’s and seems rather cold and abrupt with their questions. She tells them that nothing suspicious happened to Brick before his death and that she needs to take off to a function. The brother’s exit and as soon as they leave, a woman named Randa descends down the stairs. Earlier we had seen Randa rip the heart out of a man and eat it while chanting “K’uhul Ajaw, Cacao Shi-Jiiy”. Randa reminds Eleanor that she needs to keep quiet about everything.

Later that night, Dean and Sam return to Eleanor’s house to investigate while she is out. They find it peculiar that Eleanor stays in the same room as Brick used to. Dean uncovers a secret room in the closet. They find old sports equipment and a ton of letters that date back several decades addressed to a woman named Betsy. They dig deeper and find that Betsy is actually Eleanor. They also begin to figure out that Brick is seen in several old photos. He is seen as a boxer, a baseball player, etc. Brick seems to be immortal.

Dean and Sam confront Eleanor about their findings and she finally admits that Brick is a thousand year old Mayan High Priest named Inyo. Long ago he had agreed to make two yearly sacrifices to Cacao to stay a sporting young warrior. She believes that Brick wanted everything to end because she was starting to age and would die soon. They were very much in love and it tore him to pieces that he would go on without her. After his death, 8 different organs were donated to people. Eleanor believes that they must kill the person who has Brick’s heart and she knows who has it…Randa.

Sam and Dean arrive at the strip club where Randa works. They are immediately attacked by her henchmen, Paul and some other organ recipient. Randa pounces on Dean and nearly rips his heart out, but Sam distracts her. Dean stabs her in the heart and watches as she and her henchmen die. Eleanor can now age in peace knowing that the sacrifices will now end and that Brick is at rest.

Heart-Broken

As Dean celebrates another case handled, he is befuddled by Sam’s desire to not be a warrior anymore. Sam expresses an interest in going back to college and having a normal life. Sam drifts off within himself and we get a glimpse of what he experienced during his year “off” from demon chasing… A sunny park picnic awaits Sam, along with his dog Riot and a sweet woman named Amelia. She surprises him with a birthday cake, something Sam immediately cherishes. Sam snaps back to reality, but seems heartbroken.

Quotable Quotes:

Dean to Sam: “What are you thinking about? Organic tomatoes?”

Dean to Sam: “Really? Our King Daddy monster is a stripper?”
