Supernatural Recap: “A Little Slice of Kevin”
Original Air Date: Wednesday November 14, 2012
Season 8, Episode 7

Dean carries the weight of the world on his conscious. Try as he may, he cannot save everyone. This week’s episode examines and repairs the crack in Dean’s heart caused by Castiel. The agony from years of trying to save the people he loves most and failing, is apparent on Dean’s face. It seems to me that Dean has been the glue to saving humanity. Come Hell or highwater, Dean will march on through, like a righteous warrior.

CASTIEL!!!

Sam’s interest is piqued when he comes across some peculiar news stories that involve people disappearing, just as a destructive natural event occurs. Their suspicions are confirmed that this is the work of demons after they question a witness who tells them that she smelled sulfur on the scene of one of the events. Dean is distracted and emotionally disturbed by the intermittent sightings of Castiel that keep popping up. Although Dean believes he is hallucinating, he is shocked when Castiel walks straight back into their lives again.

Castiel is disheveled and worn. Although this disorderly appearance covers him, he seems to have his head on straight…no more randomly random Cas. He explains to the Winchesters that he has no idea how he got out of Purgatory. This doesn’t sit right with Dean. Sam gets back to trying to solve the correlation of the missing people and natural disasters. As he starts reading off the names of the missing people, Castiel reads off the entire list without looking. He explains that these are the names of the prophets. Every angel instinctively knows the names of all the prophets…past, present, and future. Sam suddenly receives a panicked call from Mrs.Tran, Kevin Tran’s mother. She tells them that Crowley has abducted Kevin.

Craigslist?!

Mrs. Tran explains to Sam, Dean, and Castiel that she had hired a witch off of Craigslist to help her gather the ingredients needed to make demon bombs. When the crafty witch ratted them out to Crowley, Kevin was abducted. As far as Kevin knew, Crowley had his mom killed. Leave it to “Tiger Mom” to grab a water gun full of holy water to capture the demon sent to kill her. The guys force the demon to tell them where Crowley has taken Kevin. Crowley abducted these people because even though they aren’t aware that they are future prophets, he is aware. And if he can’t get Kevin to decipher the tablet, he might have a shot with the other prophets.

Kevin is brought to an abandoned warehouse where he is in the company of the abducted people. Crowley figures that he can get Kevin to talk by torturing him. He cuts off one of Kevin’s fingers and Kevin has had enough, mainly because he believes his mother is dead. Just as he is about to divulge all of the details about sealing the Gates of Hell forever and Metatron to Crowley, Castiel bursts in. Crowley is surprised to see Castiel fresh out of Purgatory and doesn’t believe that Cas will be able to take him down. Castiel lights up with all the glorious shine of Heaven and we see his all encompassing power overtake the room. The tablet breaks, Crowley disappears, and Cas has saved the day.

Penance

Sam and Dean reunite Kevin and his mom, and tell them that Garth will be guiding them to safety. Dean just can’t hold it in anymore. He needs to confront Castiel about Purgatory. Dean feels like a failure because he was unable to pull Castiel out. Castiel admits to Dean that he never wanted to leave because he needed to do Penance for all of the wrong he did in Heaven and Earth. Castiel is touched by Dean’s unwavering loyalty and relentless spirit. The two make amends and seem to become more bonded than ever. Smack dab in the middle of a conversation with Sam and Dean, Castiel is thrust into an office with a lady named Naomi. She explains to Cas that he is in Heaven and will be reporting back to her frequently, although he will never remember having done so. She sends him back to the exact moment he left. It would seem that Heaven has an agenda, but what that is, we don’t know.

Quotable Quotes:

Sam to Dean: “You look like you’ve seen…I was gonna say you look like you’ve seen a ghost, but you’d probably be stoked.”
Kevin to Mrs. Tran: “Mom, you’ve got to stop drowning me in holy water every time I go out!”

Mrs. Tran to Kevin: “I hired a witch. Off of Craigslist. Her name is Delta Mendota and she is a smart cookie. She’s scrappy, reliable and she’s willing to kill.”

Mrs. Tran: “You know the rules. Casual Encounters. That means no questions asked.”
Kevin: “No mom, that’s another part of Craigslist.”

Delta to Kevin and Mrs.Tran: “I take my witch business real serious. I’m on it and it’s gonna be wicked awesome.”

Mrs.Tran to Delta: “Listen, you little skank. In the service industry you always deliver the goods, then you get paid. Even hookers know that.”

Mrs. Tran: “I hired a witch and she ratted us out.”
Sam: “A witch? Why’d you hire a witch?”
Mrs. Tran: “To make demon bombs, of course.”

Crowley to Kevin: “Doesn’t anyone ever edit this stuff? So far, as a writer, God’s a snooze. No fun at parties, I hear.”

Crowley to Castiel: “Which Castiel is it this time, I’m never sure. Mad man or megalomaniac?”
