A Quiet Place Dominates in its Opening Weekend

Movie Reviews, Movies Comments Off on A Quiet Place Dominates in its Opening Weekend

The film A Quiet Place is the latest horror gem to hit theaters and so far is a huge success. In its opening weekend, A Quiet Place made $50 million in ticket sales, making it the second strongest opening for a film in 2018, only behind Black Panther.

The movie follows the Abbott family in the year 2020 as they try to survive in total silence thanks to blind creatures with an extremely keen sense of hearing that have taken over the planet. The family uses sign language to communicate- which happens to be convenient for Lee and Evelyn Abbott’s daughter Regan who is deaf. Living in silence is a difficult enough task, but doing everything from scavenging for food and necessities to keeping your three kids happy and safe in such a dangerous world without making a sound seems like an equally terrifying and impossible task. Much of the movie is silent, which makes for a profoundly eerie movie watching experience, especially in a full theater.

Based on a story written by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck, John Krasinski both directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Woods and Beck. Krasinski also stars in the film with his wife Emily Blunt. This was their first time acting together, and despite many warning them not to, the couple are thrilled to have had the opportunity.

As a lifelong fan of the horror genre, I am beyond thrilled that movies like A Quiet Place, Get Out and Stephen King’s IT have had such great success. Unique, well executed horror films have sadly been few and far between in recent years and I feel that is in large part to the big movie studios considering them to not be worthwhile. With the popularity of these films, there is no doubt a demand for quality horror and thrillers, so let’s hope Hollywood allows for that call to be answered.

A Quiet Place is now playing in theaters nationwide. If you have seen it, let us know what you think!
