Nikita Recap: “Dead Drop”
Original Air Date (The CW): Friday May 4, 2012
Season 2 Episode 21

There’s a lot to love about Nikita. But perhaps its greatest asset (besides the obvious) is it’s unwritten rule of never wasting time. I can name a plethora of shows that would’ve taken a minimum of two acts to first get to the initial twist that Kendrick was dirty. But Nikita did it in the first fifteen minutes. And that was after delivering a beautiful fire fight in which one of our leads took a bullet to the gut in the first five minutes. What works about the Kendrick story line in Dead Drop wasn’t the fact that it’s a twist within a twist within a twist. It’s that all the twists felt like they were occurring naturally within the story. And not forced upon the audience (despite the fact that on paper they would appear that way).

But while the main story line in Nikita has always been the dismantling of Division, the show’s also very good at it’s character relationships. And this time around it was a final confirmation of Alex and Sean’s. It’s the one relationship the show’s been tiptoeing around for the latter half of this season and it’s nice to finally have it out of the way so more screen time can be devoted to Nikita being a badass.

That isn’t to say I’m against the building of character relationships in the show, but there was always one way the Alex-Sean train was heading. It wasn’t like season one where Michael was incapable of getting with Nikita because of his then loyalties to Division (and the fact that Nikita and Michael had been together during Nikita’s tenure in the agency).

But where Dead Drop shined the most was in its final moments. By destroying home base, Team Nikky is now on the run for the final two episodes of the season. Sure, they have Ryan’s safe house but I’ve got a strong feeling it’s only going to provide a tiny amount of security compared to Birkhoff’s beach house.

What we also have now is what appear to be some major set-up for the final two episodes with Percy’s mysterious nuclear plan. What could it be? There are plenty of theories to ponder, none of which I want to speculate on at this point in time. But I can say this for sure, this season’s final episodes definitely feel more planned out and better constructed than where we were this time last year during season one.
