Books of Magic #4

While Dr. Rose is away, Tim goes on a quest to find new magic books in the library in Books of Magic #4, only to find that he needs to be more careful.

Tim’s new guardian owl is very protective of his new charge, but in Books of Magic #4 Tim tells his new friend that he can’t go with him to school. It’s Mr. Brisby’s memorial, and he has to make sure people don’t find out about his magic.

Dr. Rose tells Tim that he doesn’t have to go to Mr. Brisby’s memorial if that means he can get some sleep, but Tim goes to school anyway. She has other business to attend to, though, so she sends the class to the library. Everyone has to find a particular book, but the one Tim needs requires the ladder to reach. When he uses magic, his nemesis Tyler spots him and it leads to chaos as the bookcase collapses. Tyler insists that he saw Tim doing something, but he can’t prove it.

Tim goes home and builds a model of his family, complete with his mother, out of his little bits and pieces of junk. He tells the owl he knew he messed up by using magic, and it helps him to focus himself by building things.

As he gets ready for bed he realizes that if he travels to the Dreamworld while he’s awake, he might not have nightmares. He grabs a few supplies and then leaves for Dreamworld with his owl.

What really works in this issue is that Tim knows he messed up, which is a sign that he understands the power in his magic. We’ve seen Tim talk about how he fidgets (he told Hettie he might need a fidget spinner to focus his attention) and so seeing him tinkering at his desk, building things by hand instead of using magic, is touching.
