Banshee Recap: “Always the Cowboy”
Original Air Date (Cinemax): Friday March 8, 2013
Season 1 Episode 9

by Julianne Snow:

Episode nine of Banshee titled ‘Always the Cowboy’ begins with Lucas as he arrives at the hospital with Carrie, who is still unconscious after the fight with Olek. As the doctors work to stabilize her, Gordon bursts in demanding to know what’s been going on between his wife and the Sheriff. Angry and with good reason, he wants to know who his wife really is.

Sugar and Job dispose of Olek’s body and when Lucas returns, they formulate a plan. The only problem with that is Rabbit is already on the way.

When Carrie finally regains consciousness, she tells Gordon their family is in immediate danger; telling him that they need to get the kids out of Banshee. Gordon is distrustful of her, especially since she has not explained anything to him, but she still convinces him to sneak her out of the hospital. When Gordon goes inside their house to collect Deva, Carrie gets into the driver’s seat and takes off to get Max from school. At the school, she passes out on its front steps, her wounds having reopened. When she wakes up in the nurse’s office, Carrie goes on a search for Max through the school. In his classroom, she looks out the window at the playground beyond and spots Max sitting at a table, just before Rabbit snatches him.

After the kidnapping is reported, the officers are all back at Cadi trying to make sense of the crime. FBI Agent Xavier barges in and unceremoniously takes over the investigation.

Switching perspectives viewers are treated to an exchange between Proctor and Rebecca. Proctor, wanting to teach Rebecca a little bit about the business that he conducts, buys her a dress so she can join him at a business meeting. At the meeting, Alex Longshadow tells Proctor he is cutting him out of the casino project. When Alex refuses to stand by the deal Proctor had with his father, Proctor blows a whistle and all of the construction workers on the site walk off the job. Later in the episode, Alex meets with Jeffrey Thompson, a former employee of Proctor’s who owes the casino a massive debt. Alex offers Thompson a clean slate, one free of debt, if he’ll agree to do some work on behalf of the tribe.

When Lucas visits Proctor at his slaughterhouse, he asks if Lucas has had sex with Rebecca. When Lucas confirms his suspicions, Proctor punches him and they fight until they are stalemated. Once they have reached a point where fighting wasn’t getting either of them anywhere, Lucas asks Proctor for help fighting the men who are after him. Proctor agrees, but makes Rebecca off-limits to Lucas, something he agrees to.

At the warehouse where Rabbit is holding Max, he has an asthma attack and tells his grandfather he needs his medication. When Carrie digs up guns she’d buried in her backyard, Gordon comes out and asks her who she is. Turning around, she tells him that she is going to get her son, but when she comes back inside, Rabbit is already inside sitting with Deva. Despite Carrie’s pleas, Rabbit reveals the truth to Carrie’s family about who she truly is. He asks Deva to retrieve the nebulizer and when Carrie asks her father is he will trade Max for her, he refuses, telling her that she will receive no mercy from him.

Rabbit is waiting for Lucas at Cadi. He tells Lucas that he wants his face to be the last one he ever sees. As Rabbit leaves the building, Lucas hears the sounds of a machine gun loading.

This episode was action packed and next week’s episode appears to be even more white knuckle inducing – can’t wait!
